Interview to Giacomo Benelli, who follow the procedure for Europarc Federation.

This summer 18 Charter verifications were carried out by 10 verifiers in six countries across Europe. One of these parks, the Italian Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano (MPATC), was Europe’s first Marine Charter Park to be verified for the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas (ECST).

Marine Protected Areas are similar to terrestrial protected areas but instead protect wildlife in parts of the oceans, seas and coasts. According to the WWF "only 2.3 % of the world's oceans are protected" and those that do exist are not managed very well. With the state of our oceans deteriorating due to overfishing and climate change it is no wonder that MPAs have recently been a hot topic in the field of conservation and politics across the globe. The situation seems to be improving slowly but surely, though. In July, for example, Scotland announced 30 new MPA allocations and Italy already has 30 MPAs and will be allocating 17 new ones over the next few years.

Giacomo Benelli was responsible for the Charter verification of MPATC. He has been an expert in protected area management for the last 20 years and a verifier for EUROPARC Consulting in Italy for a number of years now. In an interview, Giacomo kindly took some time to tell us about MPAs in Italy and his verification visit to MPATC.

Adriatic/Ionian marine and coastal protected areas "Towards 2020"

PDF Print E-mail

The sixth AdriaPAN meeting took place on June 2-4 in Pineto-Silvi, organized by Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area in the framework of the project PANforAMaR (Protected Areas Network for the Adriatic Macro-Region), thanks to the financial support of the AII - Adriatic & Ionian Initiative and the BluData Project (Abruzzo Region).

The workshop was attended by more than 250 managers of marine and coastal Adriatic/Ionian protected areas, by representatives of national and international associations, and by researchers of Universities and National Institutes.

The agenda has considered very current themes, such as the following four of the twenty Aichi targets to 2020:

1 – Establishing an ecological network of MPAs which is representative and interconnected;

2 – Achieving effective, efficient and sustainable management and good MPAs governance in the Mediterranean area;

3 – Developing territorially-integrated governance of Mediterranean MPAs, thus promoting the sharing of environmental and socio-economic benefits;

4 – Increasing the allocation of financial resources in order to establish and maintain an ecological network of effectively managed MPAs.

Several project ideas linked to Aichi targets were discussed in specific round-tables during the meeting. In particular the projects were related to many aspects such as: climate change adaptation, habitat restoration, smart management of MPAs, biodiversity conservation, awareness raising and sustainable tourism in MPAs.

The round-tables were useful to build partnerships and to exchange best practices and receive advices for the next Call for Proposals.
